Car sales in April 2021
Business and industry felt the heat once again in April this year, with lockdown-like restrictions imposed in several states, like Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Jharkhand.
Exactly one year ago, the Union government had enforced a nationwide lockdown resulting in zero sales for the industry in April 2020. This year although sales are affected due to pandemic, it is been hoped that situation will improve.
The fourth quarter of the financial year 2020 (FY’20) ended on a positive note with healthy sales numbers. However, the start of the new financial year 2021 (FY’21) has not exactly been good for car manufacturers, as India was hit by the second wave of COVID-19 in April.
Anticipating reduced demand and keeping employee safety in mind, most of the OEMs have planned shutdown of their manufacturing plants in May 2021.

The market leader, Maruti Suzuki had 1,35,879-unit sales in April 2021 as compared to 1,46,203-unit sales in March 2021. The top-three key contributors for Maruti Suzuki in April were the Swift (18,316 units), Baleno (16,384 units), and the WagonR (18,656 units).
Hyundai India the Korean car maker holds the second position in terms of car sales in April 2021. The company registered 49,002-unit sales in April 2021 as compared to 52,600 units in March 2021, thereby reporting a seven per cent negative growth in sales.
Homegrown auto giant Tata motors ranked third this month as well however company faced sharp decline in sales of 15 %. Nexon, Altroz and Tiago are the main contributors to the overall sales.
Mahindra grabbed fourth position leaving behind Kia motors. Mahindra was the exception, this month growth of 10 % noted. As usual Bolero is the most popular product from brand Mahindra.
This month Kia motors ranked fifth as it was outsold by Mahindra. There is drop of 15 % observed in the sales this month while compared last month.
Japanses car maker Toyota motors sales sharply tumbled this month. Drop of 36 % in sales number is recorded.
Market Share in April 2021
Maruti Suzuki an incontrovertible market leader followed by Korean car Maker Hyundai Motor Co. There is significant gap between their market shares of close rivals. Market leader enjoyed market share of 47.5, growth of 1.5% in market share has been observed this month compared to previous month. Closest rival of market leader managed to sustain it’s market share of 17%.

Top 10 selling Cars in April 2021 –
As usual top 10 car tally was dominated by Maruti Suzuki. Maruti cars remained first choice since long time. Except 3 Hyundai cars in tally of 10 all are from Maruti Suzuki. WagonR remained on first position followed by sibling Swift. This month also Wagon R remained hot cake. Hyundai Creta, Grand i10 and venue are the only non Maruti car which could create space in the tally.
