Car sales in may 2021 — The Car sales in the month of May has been dreadful. It was second wave of Covid 19 which created tremendous panic across the nation. Auto industry has also felt the heat of this second wave resulting in to epic decline of 64% in car sales in the month May’21 v/s Apr’21. The industry has still coped better during the second wave of lockdowns in comparison to last year.

This was primarily due to the lockdown in several parts of the country and maintenance shutdown at the majority of automakers. A dump seen in Car sales in may 2021.

Anticipating reduced demand and keeping employee safety in mind, most of the OEMs have planned shutdown of their manufacturing plants in May 2021.

The market leader, Maruti Suzuki had 32,903-unit sales in May 2021 as compared to 135,879-unit sales in April 2021. Market leader witnessed a decline of nearly 76 percent in (MoM) basis, with 1,02,976 fewer units sold. The April 2021 sale of the Swift (18,316) and Baleno (16,384) was higher than the company’s total sales the following month, at 32,903. Company had shut production and was serving nation by providing medical oxygen.

Hyundai India the Korean car makers the second position is intact in terms of car sales in May 2021. The company registered 25,001-unit sales in May 2021 as compared to 49,002 units in April 2021, thereby reporting a 49 % negative growth in sales. Creta was the highest selling car this month.

Homegrown auto giant Tata motors persistent on rank third this month as well however company faced sharp decline in sales of 40 %.Tata Motors could dispatch 15,181 units in the month of May previous month that is in April company had sold 25,096 Units.  Tata Nexon could make place for itself in the tally of top 10 selling cars.

This month Kia motors ranked fourth as it outsold Mahindra. There is drop of 31 percent observed in the sales this month while compared last month. Kia Sonet and Seltos secured

 4th and 8th rank in top 10 selling car tally.

This month Mahindra slipped to fifth position. Mahindra finished the month with a sale of 7,748 units. Drop of 52% observed in the sales. Sales numbers will definitely jump once Mahindra launches it’s new SUV XUV 700.

Japanese car maker Toyota motors sales felt maximum heat this month. Drop of 92 % in sales number is recorded. Surprisingly company couldn’t even reach 1k mark. Company could dispatch only 707 units.

French automobile manufacturer Citroen started its India journey with dispatches of 230 C5 Aircross in April 2021. Company has dispatched 40 units this month.

Market Share –

 Maruti Suzuki market leader witnessed sharp decline of 14 % in market share this month. It’s market share have come down to 32% from 45.7 %. There is worth mentioning increase in market share of South Korean car Maker Hyundai Motor Co. Market share has risen to 24.2 % from previous 16.5 %. Tata Motors recorded all time high market share of 14.75 %, company’s market share increased by more than 5%. Kia motors market share doubled this month it grew to 10.74 % from 5.2 %.

Top 10 selling Cars in May 2021 –

This month top 10 selling cars tally was dominated by Hyundai and Kia motors. Creta secured first rank and after a long time Mahindra Bolero could create place for itself. Tata Nexon  ranked 4th. Swift was the highest selling model for Maruti Suzuki. Dzire 5th position remained intact.
