The Indian auto industry is one of the largest globally; both regarding production as well as sales.
Indian two wheeler industry is also has legacy and interesting history. API (Automobile Product of India) is the first company which started manufacturing of two wheelers. It was JV between API and Enfield. API was founded by British company Rootes in 1949 in Mumbai. API was taken over by Chennai (Madras) based business group. First scooter sold by API was named API Lambretta.

The two-wheeler industry in India started gaining momentum in the country since the announcement of the process of liberalization in 1991. Established player like Escort, Enfield, and Scooter India etc. faced tough completion from new Indo Japanese JV and lost significant market share.

Two wheeler market in India

Two Wheeler market is too dynamic. The Indian and foreign 2W organizations are concentrating more on exports particularly from India. The faster growth in two-wheeler sales is mainly due to rising income levels, growing infrastructure in rural areas and rising trend of scooterization (especially among women commuters). However, despite India being the world’s largest two-wheeler market, India still has very low penetration level of two wheelers. In India, about 84 out of 1000 people have two-wheelers, which is less than half of penetration levels in Indonesia (281) and Thailand (291). Rural India has been one of the main sources of consumption demand in India, mainly due to a large population residing in this area.

Future and challenges for Electric scooter in India

India has done remarkable progress in automotive but still there are many challenges to face for EV. Main challenges are –

  • Lack of public charging infrastructure and a high cost of batteries.
  • Electricity supply in smaller towns and cities, where demand is picking up, is irregular.
  • Efficient battery pack is very crucial and currently it is not indigenized. Many components associated with same are being imported hence are costlier.
  • Electric scooters available as on date are not as powerful as their petrol counterparts. Have limitation on speed and gradient ride.

Potential is huge. Electric bike and scooter has bright future in India rather we can say India’s electric vehicle goals being realized on two wheels, not four wheels.

Government-owned power companies such as BHEL and Energy Efficiency Services plan to begin rolling out charging stations soon. Even there are some startups which are planning to work on battery swapping Instead of charging batteries. The government is also planning to offer incentives for manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries. To boost economic growth and encourage local manufacturing under its Make in India initiative.

The falling cost of batteries could boost India’s electric mobility plans. This make it that much easier for electric vehicles to be competitive with those running on other fuels.

Japan’s Suzuki Motor is working on plans to launch an electric scooter in India by 2020, while Indian motorcycle makers Bajaj Motor and TVS Motor are also eyeing electric models.
Yamaha, which is developing a global electric two-wheeler platform, plans to bring an electric scooter or motorcycle to India.
