HMSI plans to launch Electric scooters
Japanese auto giant and India’s second largest two-wheeler maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) on Thursday said it plans to launch multiple electric vehicles. It plans to launch a new entry-level motorcycle soon while multiple electric vehicles will be introduced in the coming years.
Simultaneously, the two-wheeler maker aims to further strengthen its Manesar (Haryana) plant as a Global Resource Factory for ‘Making in India for the world’.
HMSI sold 3.47 million units in the local market last fiscal, down 10% compared to 3.87 million units in the previous year. Exports grew 59% to 332,942 units in the period under review.
As of now 5 Crore Honda two wheelers are running on Indian roads.Honda Two-wheelers India currently exports products across 40 nations including Europe and Japan. The company aims to spearhead exports expansion by offering superior products in global markets. Talking about EVs, the Japanese two-wheeler maker revealed that currently, it is in the feasibility-study stage for readying its EV model line-up and developing the overall eco-system in India. It will launch several EVs in the coming years.
However there are no plans to shift existing scooter models like Active and Shine to electric scooters over next 3 years. The company will also introduce its new budget motorcycle soon that is expected to be even more affordable than the CD 110 Dream. Supply chain issues still persist and the increasing commodity & fuel prices are key concerns for industry.
Competitors like Hero Motors and TVS Motors have already geared up for electric scooters to strengthen their lineup.Hero Motors has partenered with Taiwan based company for eco system arrangement.
A leader in the scooter segment, HMSI currently rolls out its model range from four manufacturing plants — Manesar (Haryana), Tapukara (Rajasthan), Narsapura (Karnataka) and Vithalapur (Gujarat).
